Province to Investigate New Hydroelectric Opportunities in Northern Ontario

On January 20, the Ministry of Energy asked Ontario Power Generation (OPG), working with the Ontario Waterpower Association, to update previous evaluations of hydroelectric potential in northern Ontario and to engage Northern and Indigenous communities.

The province has specifically recognized the role that new hydroelectric generation can play in addressing the growing long-term electricity needs forecast for the province. Advancing northern waterpower will create opportunities and economic benefits for Northern and Indigenous communities.

The OWA has long recognized the importance of positive and productive relationships with Northern and Indigenous communities and for more than a decade, has worked with these communities to build capacity. Many Indigenous communities have moved from being partners in, to proponents of, waterpower projects as captured in our Footprints to Follow publication.
