It may be summertime, but the fall conference season is coming up fast! OWA is excited to be hosting its inaugural Waterpower Summit and Trade Show – Resetting and Re-Energizing September 15th – 16th. This virtual event will augment the OWA’s Power of Water Canada (POWC) Technical Conference and Trade Show, scheduled for May, 2021 and provide networking, educational and business opportunities for participants.
The Summit features several fast-paced sessions, held over two (2) half days focused on the key role of waterpower in the context of immediate and emerging economic imperatives and environmental opportunities, as well as industry operational challenges and technical innovations. On the first day, OWA Board Chair Stephen Somerville will kick off the event with his views regarding Ontario’s waterpower industry’s role in re-setting and re-energizing the province, post pandemic.
This session will be followed by an opening keynote address by Peter Gregg, President and CEO of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Mr. Gregg will be discussing the need for a variety of approaches to meet long term electricity resource adequacy and to ensure a reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity system.
Following the opening remarks and keynote, the event will feature four (4) panel sessions, bookended by several networking opportunities and a virtual trade show.
The first session will be focused on political and policy drivers featuring Bonnie Hiltz, Vice President, Energy and Environment, Sussex Strategy and Mitchell Davidson Executive Director, StrategyCorp Institute of Public Policy and Economy, and adaptations made through the pandemic that are likely to be sustained. Delegates will hear perspectives and insights both on the near and longer-term.
Next, Toby Heaps, CEO and Founder of Corporate Knights Inc. and Tabatha Bull, President & CEO of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business, will discuss how the pandemic pause provides a unique opportunity to re-think what the next “business as usual” could be. Decisions on the electrification of the broader economy, Indigenous leadership and climate change action have real potential to redefine the path forward. The session will be moderated by Adam Chamberlain Partner, Gowlings WLG.
The second day of the Summit will focus on key on the ground learnings from the perspectives of product and service providers and generators. The first session will discuss adaptations, and innovations that will be maintained post-pandemic and provide insight on how the waterpower industry as a whole learn from individual adaptations. Panelists will include Tim Saville – Sr. Hydroelectric Consultant, Kleinschmidt Associates Canada, Richard Donnelly. Global Principal Consultant – Waterpower and Dams at Hatch, Jon Atkinson – Director, WSP – Central Canada and Bob Clarke, P.Eng. Vice President, ASI Group, Remote Services. The session will be moderated by Stefan Kohnen, Regional Manager of KGS Group.
The fourth and final session will be moderated again by OWA Board Chair Stephen Somerville, featuring a panel of generators, including Elinor D’Cunha, Director of Commercial Operations, Ontario Power Generation and Marc Mantha, Vice President, Operations, H2O Power Holding LP who will be reviewing the physical and human experiences of the pandemic and a look ahead to the “next normal”.
