The Science Behind Waterpower

Turbine
Turbine

The energy of the water that passes through the facility is harnessed by the turbine.

The amount of energy that may be produced is dependent on the height that the water drops (the head) and the amount of water that passes through.

As the turbine is turned by the water, it turns the generator. The generator is made up of large magnets which are rotated past coils of wire. As the magnets pass the coils, the electrons in the wire begin to move due to the magnetic field. This movement of electrons is electricity!

The electricity then goes to a transformer which converts the voltage to a much higher level that is easier transmit over long distances.
