Part 1 focuses on providing the current status of the Hydropower Industry in the world, in Canada and in Ontario within the context of Mitigation of Climate Change. This part of
the presentation includes:
• Brief considerations about Climate Change and Mitigation
• Relationship between Hydropower and Climate Change
• Advantages and disadvantages of Hydropower
• World-wide status of the Hydropower industry, including Canada and Ontario
• Past barriers to Hydropower development
Part 2 focuses on the current world-wide strategic change in direction of the Hydropower Industry. This part of the presentation includes:
• Introduction of a conceptual model for explaining the shift in direction being undertaken by governments in favor of Hydroelectric development
• Highlights of the new world-wide renaissance in Hydropower
• New policies of the Canadian government impacting on Hydropower
• Relevant highlights from Legislations and Programs introduced by the Ontario government, including: new mandate to OPG, Green Energy Act, Feed-In-Tariff, Cap and Trade Legislation, Far North Legislation, and other initiatives.
Speaker Bio
Ion Corbu has worked for over 30 years for the two largest Power Utility Companies in Canada: Ontario Power Generation (formerly Ontario Hydro) and Hydro Quebec. He has directed hydroelectric studies on many rivers in both Ontario and Quebec. He has participated in technical committees and in joint working groups with other Canadian and US power utilities, government agencies, universities and private consultants. He has authored technical publications in the hydroelectric domain, has lectured on the operation of hydroelectric plants at Canadian universities, and has chaired sessions on hydro-power at international conferences. Also, Ion has been invited by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to evaluate submissions from Universities and Power Utilities for research grants in hydrology, water resources and the impact of climate change on the design and operation of new and existing hydropower facilities. Currently Ion is the Principal of Corbu Consulting Inc. in Toronto.
